le 22 juin:  We had a great time at the waterfront yesterday for National Indigenous Day.  Here are some pictures:

We had our intérro:

  1. I gave a painting to Zimm. J’ai donné une peinture à Zimm.
  2. I gave one to him. Je lui en ai donné un.
  3. I used to paint with paintbrushes. Je peignais avec les pinceaux.

We decided to cancel our Butze trip as it was really rainy out at noon (but cleared up later.... grr!).  We had our intérro then played a French version of Seven-Up, then went over in detail everything that needs to be in your presentation.  I gave you time to work on the presentation, then an opportunity for you to practice your presentations in front of the class, but no one felt ready.

I explained to you in detail about my expectations for the presentation:  
  • everyone is presenting in front of the class on either Friday or Monday.  I'll call your name on Friday and the expectation is that you will go to the front of the class with your painting and give your presentation in a clear voice that everyone can hear.
  • you will be marked not only on the content of your presentation, but also on your presentation skills, which include:
    • volume of voice;
    • not using any English;
    • no excessive pauses or "ummm"s
    • not speaking in a monotone
  • you need to hand in your good copy of your presentation (written on the Bill Helin card that I gave you) on the day that you present.  That card will be marked on:
    • how neatly it's done
    • spelling
    • grammar
    • use of the content and grammar/verb points we talked about today
We finished with a fun game of zig zag zog that ended in a head injury from a yeeted candy, but lucky it was just GZ's head.

Homework:  finish up practicing your presentation, due Friday

We then began our "object pronoun-palooza" with our workbook, reviewing some concepts to do with object pronouns and learning some new information.  It was quite a busy afternoon, but you guys did great.

Homework:  finish up whatever questions we didn't get to on the worksheet (questions 5, 7, and 10).  As well, keep working on your presentation, due Friday.

We took up the homework:

  1. My medicine gives me peace of mind. Mon médicament me donne un tranquillité d’esprit.
  2. My medicine gives me a sense of home and a sense of family. Mon medicaments me donne le sentiment d’être chez moi, et le sentiment de famille.
  3. My medicine reminds me of home and soothes me.  Mon médicament me rappelle d’être et m’apaise.
  4. My medicine brings me to another place and makes me feel loved. Mon médicament m’amène à un autre endroit et me fait me sentir aimé.
  5. My medicine gives me a sense of purpose and a sense of community. Mon médicament me donne un but et le sentiment de communauté.

I sent around a piece of paper on which you were to write your medicines in English, then I wrote out the translations in French and put the paper on the board.  I think most of you went and  copied down your own medicine translation, or took a picture.  We then went over how to form the impératif, which isn't really a tense but rather a "mood", as it doesn't denote any time frame.  It's used to give instructions, invitations, suggestions, or commands.  I use it all the time in class:  Take out your notebooks; give me the intérro booklets, write "corrected by" and your name on top of the paper as usual, etc.  

​Here's how to form l'impératif:  just take the tu, nous, and/or vous form of the present tense, and use it as a "stand-alone" verb with no subject pronoun.  Eg:

speak French - parle français (there's no "s" on the tu form of regular "er" verbs, for some reason)
choose a partner:  choisissez une partinaire (when speaking to more than one person)
let's go to McDonald's:  allons à McDo (when you're including yourself in the fun)

Here are some examples which we did today:

  1.  Choose a paintbrush. (s)  Choisis un pinceau.
  2. Let’s use a frame. Utilisons un cadre.
  3. Paint in the studio. (pl) Peignez dans l’atelier.
  4. Answer the artist. (s) Réponds à l’artiste.
  5. Eat a sandwich (pl) Mangez un sandwich.
  6. Do the dishes.  (s) Fais la vaisselle.
  7. Let’s use ovoids.  Utilisons des ovoïdes.

On Monday we'll go over how to use object pronouns with l'impératif, as well as how to use object pronouns with the passé composé.

Homework:  Work on your projects.  You will have time on Monday, Thursday, and Friday to work on them, but Tuesday and Wednesday we'll be doing other activities.

Intérro:  parler, choisir, répondre, peindre, utiliser, manger in all three forms of the impératif, plus the words français, une partenaire, aux questions, une peinture, un pinceau, des ovoïdes, un sandwich.  Eg:

We then had a little competition to see which group could figure out where object pronouns are placed when one is using passé composé, and unfortunately we all tied for zero!  lol  Here are the answers:

We then took a look at a powerpoint of some of Michelle Stoney's work and chose which design we wanted to use for our project (due June 23).  Here's the powerpoint; if you were away today, please look at it and choose a design:

We then did a review of our object pronouns:

le - him/it
la - her/it
les - them

We reviewed that they are placed in front of the verb.  Eg:  I want them = Je les veux.  You paint it = Tu la peint.

We then learned a new object pronoun:  en.  En replaces any derivation of "de" (du, de la, des, de l', etc) and the object which follows it.  It's English translation is "some" or "any".  If you add a number to the sentence, the meaning changes slightly to "<number> of them".  Eg:

Tu veux des bonbons?       Do you want some candies?
Oui, j'en veux.                      Yes, I want some.
Oui, j'en veux deux.             Yes, I want two of them.

le 7 juin:  We started our new unit today, and learned some vocabulary for the artist's workshop.  We also learned about the importance of respecting Indigenous art and artists, and how vital it is that we understand what the art signifies and that it's not for us to copy unless we have permission.  One of our Elders Mr, Spencer came in to talk to us about this.

Homework:  Because I wasn't able to have internet access until later in the evening, there's no homework.  There is, however, an...

Don't forget you have your test on Monday.  Here are some sample questions:

-be able to say what is in a room (from the five that we did):  Qu'est-ce qu'il y a dans une chambre?  Qu'est-ce qu'il y a dans un salon?  Each question will be worth one mark for each of the items I expect, plus one extra mark for the sentence structure. 

Eg:  Qu'est-ce qu'il y a dans une salle de bains?  /5          Dans une salle de bains, il y a un lavabo, une baignoire, des toilettes, et un tapis de bains.

You will be able to choose which items you want to mention.

-be able to say what you did, were doing, and are doing in each of the five rooms we concentrated on.  Use the verb chart I made for you yesterday to remind yourself what actions belong in which room.

Eg:  Qu'est-ce que tu fais dans le salon?  /4  Dans le salon, je m'assieds sur le sofa, je parle au téléphone, et je joue aux jeux vidéos.

-be able to translate your entire introduction into French.

-be able to translate sentences which are in imparfait, passé composé, and the present tense, with object pronouns.

Eg:  I made a sandwich in the kitchen and I'm eating it.  J'ai fait un sandwich dans la cuisine, et je le mange.
       I was doing the dishes;  I'm doing them.  Je faisais la vaiselle; je la fais.
       There isn't any attic.  Il n'y a pas de grenier.

I won't ask you for any of the rooms that we didn't concentrate on.  So, no foyer, entrance hall, wine cellar, family room, etc.

le 1 juin:  After our intérro we took up the homework, then we learned furniture and verbs to do with the living room.  We practiced putting these verbs into the imparfait and present tenses (and some of you put them into the passé composé; bravo!).  

Homework:  Practice your presentation, which is due on Friday, plus translate the following sentences into French:

1.  I am sitting on the sofa in the living room on the basement floor.
2.  I was speaking quietly to my mother on the telephone about my friends, but now I'm playing video games.
3.  Here's my t-shirt.  I was ironing it, and now I'm hanging it on a hanger.
4.  Here's a sandwich.  I made the sandwich, and now I'm eating it.
5.  There is an oven, a stove, a fridge, a freezer, and a microwave in the kitchen.  There isn't any kettle or coffee maker.

le 31 mai:  We didn't have any homework or intérro today, so we started right in with a sheet of questions about Phil in the kitchen, and Claire in the laundry room.  Here are the answers:

​I then went over the project again, and specified what you should be including.  Mention:

-l'hall d'entrée / le foyer
-le séjour
-la cave
-la cuisine*
-la salle à manger
-la chambre*
-le bureau
-la lingerie*
-la salle de bains*

Make sure that for the starred rooms above you mention 5-6 things per room.  Mention a few things that aren't in the rooms, as well.  For the other rooms, you can just mention the rooms themselves.

As for the actions, I'd like to hear three imparfaits, and three passé composés (minimum), two object pronouns, one negative, and lots of present tense.  Don't put any of the prenominal verbs into the passé composé (s'habiller, se laver, se lever, etc) as they all take être.  Keep them in the present tense or in l'imparfait.

If you're still a bit confused as to what to say for your presentation, here's a sample in English:

Hello, my name is GZ and I'm a guest on the unceded territories of the Ts'msyen nation.  I'm an adabiis (a butterfly).  Here's my house.  How many floors are in my house?  There are four floors in my house:  the ground floor, the first floor, the second floor, and the attic.  There isn't any basement.

On the ground floor there's an entrance way and a wine cellar. 

On the first floor there's a kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom. 

In the kitchen there's a microwave, an oven, a stove, a fridge, a freezer, and a cabinet.  There isn't any toaster.  I made a sandwich in the kitchen, and now I'm eating a sandwich. I'm eating it.

In the bedroom there's a bed, sheet, pillow, pillowcase, quilt, dresser, and shelves.  There isn't any bedside table.  I was getting up in the bedroom, and now I'm getting dressed. 

In the bathroom there's a sink, a tap, a shower, a bathmat, a towel, and some soap.  There isn't any bathtub.  I was looking at myself in the mirror, but now I'm washing.

On the second floor there's an office.  There is a computer and a phone in the office.  I used the computer, and now I'm talking quietly to my friend on the phone about homework.

There is a dining room and a family room.

On the third floor there is a laundry room.  In the laundry room there is an iron, and ironing board, a washer, a dryer, and a basket.  There isn't any drying rack or laundry basket.  I hung my t-shirt on the hanger in the laundry room, and now I'm ironing with the iron and the ironing board.  I'm ironing my t-shirt; I'm ironing it.

I hope I haven't forgotten anything!  I'm sure you'll tell me if I have.  ;)

Homework:  Keep working on your presentation, and translate the following statements into French:

le 27 mai:  We learned a new tense today:  the passé composé.  This is a compound tense which translates to "I walked" or "you ran" or "he stole", "she sneezed", etc.  It requires a helper, or auxiliary verb in order to be formed (unlike the present and imparfait tenses).  If you were away, take a look at this website to learn a bit about the passé composé.  All we did today was regular er, ir, and re verbs that take avoir as their helper:  www.frenchtoday.com/blog/french-verb-conjugation/passe-compose/.

le 24 mai:  Welcome back from May Long!  Today we went over what we've done so far on the unit, and reviewed what our TTOC did on Thursday:

Dans la chambre (in the bedroom):

-je parle fort (I speak loudly) au Zimmerman (to Zimmerman) des devoirs (about homework) au téléphone (on the phone) (you could also be talking to your friend (à mon ami), to your mother (à ma mère); you could be talking softly (doucement) or speaking French or English (je parle français / je parle anglais);

-je dors sous la couverture à mon lit (I sleep under the blanket in my bed)

We then took up the homework; we did well on the first activity but found the second activity difficult to understand.  My advice to you was to do your homework the evening before the next class, and if you don't understand it, you can text me for clarification.  Some of you came to me after class had started, and said that you didn't understand the homework; what I would have preferred was a text last night (before 9:00pm, as you know), asking for specific help.  If there was a word in the question you don't understand, why not look it up?

Homework:  Work on your comics, and on your JM is Malade presentation.  Both are due on Friday, and we're doing our quiz on Friday as well.

Intérro:  avaler, examiner, ausculter, prendre, avoir, être in present and imparfait, but only in the "je" form, as well as les comprimés, les médicaments, le malade, la gorge qui gratte, les yeux qui piquent, le nez qui coule, and le, la, les.  Eg:

1.  I was examining him.  Je l'examinais.
2.  I was ausculting her.  Je l'auscultais.
3.  I had irritated eyes.  J'avais les yeux qui grattent.
4.  I'm swallowing the pills.  J'avale les comprimés.  ​etc.  ♥

le 9 mai:  We had our intérro then did an auto-évaluation:

1.The sick person was swallowing the pills.  Le malade avalait les comprimés.
2.  He is taking them.  Il les prend.
3.  The doctor was ausculting him. Le médecin l’auscultait.
4.  We’re choosing a doctor. Nous choisissons un médecin.
5.  They (f) were not taking them.  Elles ne les prenaient pas.

We then played a game whereby you took individual words on scraps of paper and had to put them in the order I indicated during a time limit.  Félicitations Bryce et Daniel!  We then learned how to use Pixton to create our health comics which are due on Friday.

Homework:  Work on your comic, and also translate the following:

1.   I'm coughing, but (mais) he was sneezing.
2.  The doctor was examining him.
3.  They (m) weren't taking the pills.
4.  I was tired.
5.  Paul was swallowing the pills.

Intérro:  ausculter, examiner, prendre, être, avoir in all conjugations and present as well as imparfait, fatigué, constipé, mal a la gorge, mal au ventre, la diarrhée, des frissons.  I'll be putting some of these sentences into the negative, and we'll use le, la, les.  Eg:

1.  He was having diarrhea.  Il avait la diarrhée.
2.  He was examining him.  Il l'examinait.
3.  She was tired.  Elle était fatiguée (notice the extra "e" on the end of "fatigué"; it's because the subject is feminine).
4.  We had a sore throat.  Nous avions mal à la gorge.  ♥

Before we had our intérro, I did another lesson on l'imparfait.  Then we had the intérro:

  1. I am. Je suis
  2. I was. J’étais
  3. He is sneezing. Il éternue
  4. She was coughing. Elle toussait.
  5. You were throwing up. Tu vomissais.
  6. I had a headache. J’avais mal à la tête.
  7. She has the shivers. Elle a des frissons.

We then took up the homework:
  1.  Je tousse.   Je toussais.
  2. Il éternue.     Il éternuait.
  3. Elle a mal au ventre.   Elle avait mal au ventre.
  4. Le médecin examine le malade. Le médecin examinait le malade. 
  5. Il ausculte le pauvre.  Il auscultait le pauvre.
  6. Nous parlons à Paul.  Nous parlions à Paul.
  7. Vous choisissez une partenaire.  Vous choisissiez une partenaire.
  8. Ils prennent les médicaments.  Ils prenaient les médicaments. 
  9. Elles attendent le professeur.  Elles attendaient le professeur.
  10. Je suis fatigué.  J’étais fatigué.
  11. Nous sommes fatigués.  Nous étions fatigués.
  12. Paul avale le comprimé.  Paul avalait le comprimé.

I then began our lesson on object pronouns.  An object pronoun is a small word which replaces the object in a sentence (the object being the noun that receives the action of the verb).  We learned the object pronouns le, la, and les, which mean respectively him/it, her/it, and them.

Eg:

Le médecin examine le malade - Le médecin l'examine (The doctor examines the sick person; the doctor examines him)
Il ausculte le pauvre - Il l'a ausculte (He auscultes the poor sick guy; he auscultes him)
Ils prennent les médicaments - Ils les prennent (They take the medications; they take them).

Extra imparfait questions if you need help

1.  What are the eight endings in imparfait for the subject pronouns?  (je, tu, etc).
2.  How do you form the imparfait?
3.  Put the following sentences into the imparfait:

-Je tousse.
​-Il éternuer
-Il a mal à la tête.

Homework:  Just practice your JM est Malade, and be thinking about your comic which is due on Friday.
Intérro:  ausculter, examiner, choisir, prendre, attendre in all conjugations for both present and imparfait tenses, plus le médecin, le malade, les comprimés, and the object pronouns le, la, les.  Eg:

1.  The doctor used to ausculte him.  Le médecin l'auscultait.
2.  The sick person chooses a doctor.  Le malade choisit un médecin.
3.  The doctor was waiting for him.  Le médecin l'attendait.
4.  He used to take the pills.  Il prenait les comprimés.
5.  He used to take them.  Il les prenait.​  ♥
le 5 mai:   Happy Red Dress Day.  Today we wear red to honour and respect missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, and two-spirit people.

Interro:  tousser, éternuer, avoir, être, vomir in the present and imparfait for je, tu, il, and elle only; mal à la tête, des frissons.  Eg:

3.  He is coughing.  Il tousse.
4.  He was coughing.  Il toussait.

After the test, we went over the "chez le médecin" vocabulary in our booklet, then watched a PowerPoint about a little visit to the doctor (Pauvre Paul).  Here it is below:

We practiced our "J-M est malade" skit a little bit (congratulations to those who have kept up with their daily memorization!).

Homework:  You don't need to memorize any more lines tonight, but please listen to the audio file I put on the webpage on Sunday to work on your pronunciation.  Try to memorize all of the lines that were due for today.  We'll try presenting again tomorrow.

We went over how to pronounce some of our lines, then we performed.  Bon travail!  We also played our first game of "Je Passe"; félicitations Justin!

We spent a bit of time on the very basics of verb conjugations:

We will be leaving with Dueck's class for our walk tomorrow afternoon at 1:45.  So we will have time for the intérro and to perform our lines before we head out to the park.  There will be treats!

Homework:  There are two parts to your homework.  Part #1:  memorize your next two lines of J-M est malade (so that you can perform your first 6 lines tomorrow)  The second part of the homework is:  write 8 small health sentences:

   -two for "je"
   -two for "tu"
   -two for "il"
   -two for "elle"

In these sentences, you'll either use the verb "tousser" (to cough) or éternuer" (to sneeze).  You can also include other health vocab if you feel fancy.  Here are a couple of examples:

J'ai mal à la tête et je tousse.  I have a headache and I'm coughing.
Tu tousses et tu éternues.   You're coughing and you're sneezing.
Il éternue.  He's sneezing.

Intérro:  the je, tu, il, and elle forms of tousser and éternuer.  Eg:

I'm coughing - je tousse.
You're sneezing.  Tu tousses.  Etc.  ♥
le 27 avril:  Today we had our intérro:

  1. Fingers  les doigts
  2. Shoulder     l’épaule
  3. Nose   le nez
  4. Head  la tête
  5. Back   le dos

I listened to you do your first two lines of "J-M est malade", and you did a great job!  Those who didn't go today can get their mark by presenting tomorrow.

We then listened to a tape with an accompanying sheet:

We learned (reviewed?) the present tense conjugations of avoir (to have), which are used in the construct of "having  pain in" a body part:

j'ai               nous avons
tu as            vous avez
il a               ils ont
elle a           elles ont

We also reviewed what happens when you want to use the preposition "à" with le, la, or les, as in "I have pain in the head" or "He has pain in the knee":

à + le = au (you can't say à le when you want to say "in the" for a masculine body part, you have to say "au":  j'ai mal au dos)
à + la = à la (à la is ok)
à + les = aux (you can't say à les when you want to say "in the" for a plural body part, you have to say "au":  j'ai mal aux yeux)

I gave you a Rick and Morty sheet on which you labelled the body parts, then we did a little competition to see how quickly the teams could translate some "pain in a body part" sentences.  Bon travail!

Finally we divided up our "avoir mal à" sentences into the categories of je suis enrhumé (I have a cold - what body parts hurt?) and j'ai la grippe (I have the flu - what body parts hurt?) and came up with this:

J’ai mal à la tête
J’ai mal à la gorge
J’ai mal à l’oreille
J’ai mal aux yeux
J’ai mal au dos

There will be more symptoms of course, but none that fit into the "avoir mal à" construct.

le 26 avril:  Bienvenue à la classe!  After going over our classroom routines, I showed you a PowerPoint with all of our unit, test, and project dates on it.  We also took a look at our course outline.

I gave you a copy of "Jean-Marc est malade", which is our oral project for our first unit, "La Santé".  We went over the pronunciation of each line and the translation, and I assigned parts to the class.

We then went over what body parts you know, and chose 5 body parts for the intérro:
